How to Launch a Fashion Brand in the UK: From Concept to Retail-Ready

Starting a clothing brand in the UK has never been more accessible — but it's still one of the most complex creative and commercial undertakings you can take on. The brands that succeed are the ones that treat manufacturing with the same seriousness they give to design. Here's how the process actually works.

Step 1: Start With a Clear Brand Identity

Before you pick a blank or brief a designer, know what your brand stands for. Who is the customer? What's the aesthetic? What price point are you targeting? These answers drive every manufacturing decision that follows.

A brand trying to compete on premium quality needs different fabrics, decoration methods, and finishes to one targeting the festival market. Getting clear on positioning first saves enormous money later.

Step 2: Design Your Collection

Great garments start with great technical documentation. For manufacturing, this means tech packs — detailed specification sheets that communicate every dimension, material, colourway, print placement, and finish to your production team.

If you're designing in-house, software like Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard. If not, working with a design-led manufacturer like Elusiv means access to an in-house creative team that can take your mood boards and references and translate them into factory-ready blueprints.

Step 3: Choose Your Decoration Methods

The design doesn't just live on paper — it needs to be physically applied to a garment. The main decoration methods available in the UK are screen printing, embroidery, DTG, DTF, and garment dyeing. Each has different quality, cost, and MOQ implications.

For a launch collection, many brands use a combination: screen printed tees as their core volume product, embroidered caps as an accessory, and a small DTG or DTF run for limited-edition pieces. Working with a single facility that handles all methods simplifies the supply chain significantly.

Step 4: Select Your Blanks and Fabrics

Blanks are the undecorated garments your prints and embroidery go onto. The UK market has strong access to premium European blanks — Stanley/Stella, Colorful Standard, and Organic Basics are popular choices for sustainability-conscious brands, while Gildan and Bella+Canvas dominate the value end.

For bespoke cut-and-sew (designing your own silhouettes from scratch), you'll need fabric sourcing, pattern making, and grading — a more complex process but one that gives you full ownership of the product.

Step 5: Understand Minimum Order Quantities

MOQs vary significantly by decoration method and supplier. Screen printing typically starts at 50 units per design for single colours, rising for multi-colour work. DTG and DTF can run with no minimums at all, making them ideal for sampling and limited drops.

At Elusiv, we work with brands at various scales — from independent creators with small-batch requirements to established labels running 100,000+ units a week. Understanding your realistic sell-through before committing to quantity is one of the most important financial decisions you'll make.

Step 6: Labelling, Packaging, and Compliance

UK law requires every garment to carry a label stating fabric composition and care instructions. Beyond compliance, your labels are a branding touchpoint — branded woven labels, hangtags, and packaging are what separate a polished retail product from a print-on-demand dropship item.

Elusiv's processing department handles re-labelling, swing tags, poly-bagging, and retail-ready finishing in-house. This means your garments arrive fully prepared for your retail partners or D2C dispatch — no third-party fulfilment warehouse required.

Step 7: Build Your Supply Chain for Scale

The brands that grow quickly are the ones whose supply chains can scale with them. That means working with manufacturers who have real capacity, transparent lead times, and quality control built into the process — not bolted on as an afterthought.

Elusiv's Leicester facility runs 100,000+ units weekly, with an in-house QC team and a 100% transparent supply chain. We don't broker your work out to unknown third parties. What you brief us on is what we produce.
